[Helen Adams Keller] "Midstream: My Later Life"

彼女の 3つ目の 自叙伝 "Midstream" (1929) は 先の "The Story of My Life" (1903?) と ともに 岩崎武夫の 訳で この本に 収められている。
そこに 「マーク・トウェイン」 と 題された 長い章が あり、彼女が ハットン邸に 招かれ U.S.A. による フィリピン侵略に ついての トウェインの 講演を 聞く 場面が でてくる。
これは 小説 『ファンストン将軍の自己弁護』 "A Defence of General Funston" (1902) の トウェイン自身による 朗読だと -- 全部では ないとしても -- ぼくは 考えている。

作家が 自らの 作品を 聴衆に 向かって 読むのは、古くは ゴーゴリが ツルゲーネフを 含む 客の 前で 彼の 戯曲を 読み上げており、日本では 武谷三男が その 思い出の 中で 久保栄が 彼の小説 『のぼり窯』 を 武谷のため 朗読したことを 書き留めていた。

ある晩のこと、クレメンス氏*1は 書斎で、集まってきた 知名の かたがたに -- そのうちには ウッドロー・ウィルソン氏も おられたのですが -- フィリピンの 現状について 一場の 講演を されたことが ありました。 私たちは 熱心に 聞いておりました。

そして 男や、女や、子どもたちを 合わせて 六百人もの モーロー人が ヨーローの 近くにある 死火山の 噴火口の中に 避難しているところを、レオナルド・ウッド将軍の 命令だと いって 包囲して 虐殺し、また 数日後 ファンストン大佐は 部下を 敵軍の 兵のように 変装させて、(フィリピンの) 愛国者 アギナルドーを 捕縛したと いうようなことを 話されました。

あのかたが どれくらい 深い情熱を たたえ、熱弁を 有して おられたかと いうことは、実際に あのかたの 話を 聞いた人で なければ 想像することは できません。

政治や、(帝国主義) 戦争に おいて、または フィリピン、コンゴー、パナマの 現地人に たいする 暴虐において、いやしくも 人間と 人間との 関係の 歪められていると 見た 場合には、あくまでも 戦い抜くと いうのが あのかたの 一生で ありました。

私は あのかたの 政治上の 意見を 愛し (共に しました) が、それは 多くの 場合に 私の意見と 合致するものが あったからです。

One evening in the library he lectured to a distinguished company -- Woodrow Wilson was present -- on the situation in the Philippines. We listened breathlessly.

He described how six hundred Moros -- men, wemen, and children -- had taken refuge in an extinct crater bowl near Jolo, where they were caught in a trap and murdered, by order of General Leonard Wood. A few days afterwards, Col. Funston captured the patriot Aguinaldo by disguising his military marauders in the uniform of the enermy and pretending to be friends of Aguinaldo's officers. Upon these military exploits, Mr. Clemens poured out a volcano of invective and ridicule.

Only those who heared him can know his deep fervour and the potency of his flaming words. All his life he fought injustice wherever he saw it in the relations between man and man -- in politics, in wars, in outrages against the natives of the Philippines, the Congo, and Panama.

I loved his views on public affairs, they were so often the same as my own.
